Betula pendula ‘Dalecarlica’ is a graceful birch tree with a lovely attractive smooth peeling bark. The bark has a distinctive pinkish brown colour when young and as it matures, it develops dark fissures. The tree has an upright habit and grows to reach heights of 12m with a spread of 5m in a 20 year period. It has slightly pendulous branches with conical, lightly toothed edged, bright and glossy yellow green leaves. The foliage turns to a lovely yellow hue in autumn before falling in the winter.
Like most birch trees, Dalecarlica is fast growing and will tolerate most types of soil including sandy soils. It is fully hardy and be planted in full sun or partial shade. It requires little if no maintenance, making it ideal for those gardeners who are less experienced or pressed for time.
Betula pendula ‘Dalecarlica’ is a great statement tree offering all-year round interest. It is ideal for parks, public spaces, avenues and walkways. In a home garden it creates an ornamental focal point with its stunning bark. For a wow-factor, add some accent lighting at night to enhance the effect of the peeling bark on the bare winter branches. Your Swedish Birch will become a very special addition to your outdoor living space.
