Malus ‘White Star’ was created by the British fruit enthusiast, Hugh Ermen. It is a vigorous, full hardy tree and is easy to grow. It is also disease resistant, giving you one less thing to worry about, especially pleasing to new or inexperienced gardeners!
This Crab Apple tree offers stunning profuse snowy-white star shaped flowers in spring. The flowers are beautifully contrasted by the copper-red young foliage that later turns to green in summer and finally to a purple hue in winter. The flowers are followed by golden crab apples that remain on the bare branches well into the winter season. These arching branches look wonderful, filled with golden-russet fruits when the rest of your garden is bare and lifeless.
Birds, bees and other pollinating insects are attracted to the fruits, bringing life, sound and movement into your sleeping garden.
Malus ‘White Star’ grows fairly quickly, with a pleasing upright spreading shape. It is fully hardy and will tolerate most soil types but prefers fertile, well drained soil. Plant in full sun or partial shade for best results. It will reach a height of 6m and a spread of 5m in a 20 year period.
Position your Malus ‘White Star’ where you can easily see it through a window in winter, when you have to remain indoors. It is sure to put a smile on your face with its glorious golden colour.
